Project requirements
During the 2019–20 Kangaroo Island bushfires, Flinders Chase National Park was severely impacted, with approximately 96% of the park burnt. The completion of the new visitor centre marked a significant milestone in the Department for Environment and Water’s bushfire recovery efforts.
Solution
Access Tanks were selected by the designing engineer to manufacture the tanks for this project. Our unique ability to custom build the tanks to the engineered site-specific requirements made us stand out from the crowd.
The treatment system selected by the designing engineer consisted of a combination of 5-Chamber and 6-Chamber Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) configurations, for enhanced, higher-quality primary treatment.

Why an Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR)?
ABR’s also provide a higher level of BOD & TSS removal than a conventional septic tank, due to the improved hydraulic efficiency of the baffled flow path (better settling of solids), the increased contact time with the active biomass to degrade organic matter, and more effective anaerobic digestion of sludge.
In this case, the concentration of BOD5 of the raw influent is much higher than normal domestic raw influent (up to 6x more concentrated in the case of the public toilets), and consequently the applied organic mass loading was the critical case with this project in these soil conditions and not the hydraulic loading.
Project implementation
The collaborative effort between our exceptional team, the designing engineer, installing contractor, and transport provider resulted in the project’s success.
